doom.wad (Modern)
Overview
doom.wad is the IWAD for the commercial release of Doom and The Ultimate Doom.
Originally, Doom split its content into three Episodes of nine levels each. In order, these are Knee Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, and Inferno. The first episode, Knee Deep in the Dead, was also released as the shareware version of the game.
In June of 1995, id Software released a rebranded version of the game featuring a fourth Episode entitled Thy Flesh Consumed. This new episode was intended to bridge the gap between Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth, as well as provide added value for people buying the new boxed retail release. Most versions of Doom sold today will include this extra episode.
This specific version of doom.wad is currently available from online retailers like Steam and GOG.com. It's also the version found on the Doom Trilogy Collector's Edition CD-ROM, for those who prefer their demons on physical media.
